Friday 10 November 2017
As Australia’s first Minister for Repatriation, Edward Millen was responsible for overseeing the successful return of 160,000 fighting men to Australia after the Armistice on 11 November 1918, making sure the men were absorbed into the workforce, and that vocational training and housing schemes were devised, medical services provided and widows and children supported. He was heard to remark it 'will kill me, either politically or physically'. You can read his story as well as those of many returning diggers in the Australian Dictionary of Biography published by the National Centre of Biography.
