ADB Medal for Honorary Associate Professor Ross Johnston
Thursday 1 October 2026

Friends of the Australian Dictionary of Biography gathered recently for a celebratory lunch at the University of Queensland for Ross Johnston, former head of the UQ History Department and chair of the ADB's Queensland Working Party from 1983 to 2000.

In a long-overdue recognition, Ross’s generous contributions and leadership were marked by the award of an ADB Medal for Long and Distinguished Service.

The medal itself was graciously delivered by editorial board chair Tom Griffiths (who had collected it from Canberra en route to Brisbane). It’s fair to say that Ross was delighted, and with a lovely meal and setting it was an enjoyable event for all.

Messages of congratulations were read from colleagues who were unable to attend, and together with a few characteristically expressive stories from Ross it was a memorable occasion. A well-deserved and very appropriate victory lap for one of the great stalwarts of the ADB!

—Geoff Ginn, Chair, Queensland Working Party
