The ANU Research School of Social Sciences is proud to announce the appointment of Associate Professor Maria Nugent as the new Head of the School of History, following Professor Carolyn Strange in the role.

Dr Nugent brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished record of academic achievement to the position. She joined ANU in 2009 as a research fellow in the Australian Centre for Indigenous History and later served as its co-director (2018-2023). Maria’s area of research is Australian Indigenous and cross-cultural history and memory studies. Since 2011, she’s been involved in a series of collaborative projects partnering with international museums and Indigenous communities to engage with collections of Indigenous Australian material culture. She’s held various research fellowships, including an ARC Future Fellowship (2011-2015) and in 2015-16 was Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at Tokyo University.

Dr Nugent's expertise will further enhance the school's reputation for excellence in research and education.
