Rediscovering the foundation of the Australian Antarctic Territory
Friday 8 June 2012

On Sunday 13 May at the National Archives of Australia, The School of History's Dr Marie Kawaja shared the foundation story of the Australian Antarctic Territory, which resulted from her journey of discovery through the forgotten documents of the old Department of External Affairs.

The talk was part of the National Archives of Australia's'Traversing Antarctica: the Australian experience'exhibition, celebrating the centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition led by Douglas Mawson in 1911–14.

Kawaja, who had been the consulting historian for the exhibition, was invited by the Archives to deliver a talk for their ‘Speaker’s Corner’ segment, in order to elaborate on the history behind the original documents and items on display at the exhibition.
