Ben Mercer (ANU): The six 68s of Daniel Cohn-Bendit: History, Memory and Commemoration

Daniel Cohn-Bendit
Daniel Cohn-Bendit

Daniel Cohn-Bendit was one of the key student protagonists in the revolts of May-June 1968 in France.  He rapidly attained the status of celebrity at the age of 23, the most recognisable face of student protest and thereafter identified (and self-identifying) with the events of '68.  If anything, Cohn-Bendit's prominence has only increased in subsequent decades.  He has continued to talk and write about 1968 and reinterpret the meaning of the events at regular intervals, particularly around the celebrations and commemorations that have taken place each decade up to 2018.  This paper traces the transformations of the meaning, representation, and commemoration of 1968 in the five decades since the events through the lens of the single individual who came to symbolise them.
