Welcome to the School of History

Welcome to the School of History

History has been at the heart of the Australian National University's research program since its establishment in 1946. Our staff and graduate students produce world-class research, and our three centres – of Biography, Environmental History, and Indigenous History – are active and globally recognised hubs in their fields.

The School of History is a meeting point for historians from across the university. We teach a wide variety of undergraduate courses, supervise postgraduate students across a range of fields, and maintain a vibrant culture of research seminars and departmental visitors from Australia and abroad.

We believe that history has a fundamental role to play in informing public debate and culture. Our location in Canberra – surrounded by many of the country's national institutions – enables us to fulfil that mission.

History at ANU is ranked Number 1 in Australia on the QS World University Rankings.
