Please join us for a special morning tea honouring the life and work of Professor Mike Smith AM (1955-2022).

Hosted by the Director of the National Museum of Australia, along with Mike's family and the Centre for Environmental History, the event will be held 10.00-11.30am Thursday 8 November 2022. Join us on the New Mezzanine at the National Museum of Australia.

I held the region up to the light like a gemstone, turning it around and watching its personality refracted in different ways.

This is a rich history. It is something that sits next to the Dreaming. It doesn't displace it, it doesn't replace it, but it's a rich history here, it's something to be proud of ...

It's been my privilege to work on this history, but in a sense, it has also been my gift.

Last month, Inside Story reprised Tom Griffiths' review of Mike Smith's 2013 The Archaeology of Australia's Desert - Tom remembers Mike as a 'warm, witty, courteous and deeply learned scholar and scientist whose research and fieldwork changed the way Australians understand the recent and deep past of their continent'.

Please RSVP to Ruth Morgan for catering purposes.
