The Conversation publishes Friday Essay by ACIH Co-Director
Monday 12 April 2021

On Friday, 9 April, The Conversation published ACIH Co-Director Maria Nugent's essay, 'Truth telling, Return to Uluru and reckoning with the sins of fathers', as its Friday Essay. The piece critically examines historian Mark McKenna new book, Return to Uluru, which was the subject of a recent School of History panel event at which Maria discussed the book along with Mary Spiers-Williams, Ben Silverstein and Mark McKenna himself.

Maria's essay considers Return to Uluru within the context of McKenna's previous work, as well as other efforts that have been made towards truth-telling, for instance the Myall Creek Memorial. Maria questions: 'whether a focus on the microcosmic is a productive model for this urgent and difficult work of national truth telling? Might it be a problem that a string of episodes – but not structures – are revisited and revised?'
