In 2013 Martin Thomas from the School of History won the Calibre Prize for his essay ‘Because It’s Your Country: Bringing Back the Bones to West Arnhem Land’. The essay developed from research in the north Australian community of Gunbalanya where a scientific expedition raided mortuary sites in 1948. Offered annually by Australian Book Review (ABR), the award ‘is intended to generate brilliant new essays and to foster new insights into culture, society, and the human condition.’ Martin’s essay has had 55,000 readers to date, making it the most popular item on the ABR website. To launch a monthly podcast series of readings by authors, Martin recorded his essay in the ANU media studio. ‘Because It’s Your Country’ is available on iTunes or downloadable here.
