PhD candidate Daniel May recently appeared on ABC Overnights (ABC Local) radio program with Brad McKenzie to discuss the history and lessons of the 1939 Black Friday bushfires. What happened? Why were they significant? What’s changed?

The Black Friday bushfires of 13 January 1939 swept through large parts of Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales - how would it compare to more recent bushfire tragedies?

The bushfires are considered the worst in Australia’s history and left a lasting impact on bushfire polices in the years to come.
