djirali muriyira (blood whale) by Natalie Bateman

Wednesday 17 February 2021

Many thanks to Yuin artist Natalie Bateman for sharing her work with us - her painting is titled djirali muriyira (blood whale). Please visit her website to see more of her work.

Last year we embarked on a new partnership with the Research Centre for Deep History to launch the Deep Conversations: history, environment, science series.

We're now delighted to announce that the inaugural webinar (presented on 29 October), Oceanic Histories, is now available online via Youtube.

The Research Centre for Deep History's Dr Ben Silverstein reflected on the event here.

On our blue planet, oceans have long shaped human histories. Generations have crossed the seas, fished their depths, and navigated their currents, encountering new peoples and places on the waves and on the shores. In this Deep Conversation, we reflect on just how oceans have shaped deep human pasts and how we can recover ocean histories from the deep.

Speakers:
Professor Lynette Russell, Kathleen Fitzpatrick Laureate, Monash University
Professor Patrick Nunn, University of the Sunshine Coast

Discussant: Dr Ruth Morgan, Australian National University
Chair: Dr Laura Rademaker, Australian National University
