McGrath to speak at Harvard
Friday 5 October 2012

Archeologists, historians, and indigenous communities all share an interest in the past, but often study and commemorate it in different ways.

Next week, Professor Ann McGrath, Director of the Australian Centre for Indigenous History, School of History, ANU will present a public lecture at the Standing Committee on Archeology, Harvard University, addressing these themes.

Her lecture, “Lady Mungo and the Re-enchantment of Deep Time: Indigenous and Scientific Archaeologies of Nation, History and the Sacred” will highlight recent research that seeks to combine these approaches, examining the advantages and difficulties associated with this intellectual project.

McGrath's lecture will be followed by comments from leading academics, Robert W. Preucel, Sally and Alvin V. Shoemaker Professor of Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania and David Armitage, Lloyd C. Blankfein Professor of History, Harvard University.

The lecture is presented by Harvard Standing Committee on Archaeology, Harvard Initiative for the Science of the Human Past, The Department of Anthropology, Harvard University, The Peabody Museum, Harvard University Department of History, Harvard University.
