Described at its launch last week 'as the most significant contribution to Fremantle history for 60 years', Voices from the West End has received the 2012 WA Local History Award 2012 - Fremantle.
Edited by the National Centre of Biography's Dr Paul Arthur in collaboration with lauded West Australian historian, Professor Geoffrey Bolton, the award is an appropriate nod to the book which was nearly a decade in the making.
About the book:
The wide-ranging essays in this book, written by leading historians of Western Australia, offer new insights into the influences that have shaped Fremantle’s colourful history and heritage since colonial settlement in 1829. Chapters focus on themes that bring together many strands of Fremantle’s social history, such as sea trade, migration, religion, crime and punishment, epidemics, waterfront disputes, economic development, heritage and tourism.
Voices from the West End is the outcome of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project led by Murdoch University in collaboration with Curtin University, the University of Notre Dame Australia and the University of Western Australia.
Partner organisations, the Western Australian Museum — Maritime, Fremantle Ports, the City of Fremantle, the Fremantle Historical Society, the Fremantle Society, the Archdiocese of Perth, the Basilica of St. Patrick and Fremantle Wesley Parish Mission, generously supported the project as part of their commitment to enhancing understanding of Fremantle’s past.
