Congratulations to Jessica Urwin, School of History PhD candidate, who was recently awarded the 2021–22 Mike Smith Student Prize for History of Australian Science or Australian Environmental History. The prize, issued by the Academy of Science, is awarded to the best original unpublished essay in the aforementioned fields written by a student of any tertiary institution in the world.

Jessica's essay, titled No Time to Waste: Aboriginal resistance to Australia’s nuclear waste, 1998–2004,  follows senior women of the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta group and their campaign Irati Wanti – ‘the poison, leave it’ – between 1998 and 2004. For more information about Jessica's research and the Mike Smith Student prize, please see this webpage.
