The Australian National Dictionary Centre is the pre-eminent research centre studying the history of the Australian English lexicon. Its primary research project is The Australian National Dictionary: Australian Words and Their Origins, a documentary record of Australian words and expressions.

The Australian National Dictionary Centre undertakes broad research into Australian cultural and social history, including Australian vernacular and print culture. Current ANDC research projects include an ARC-funded project on the history of Australian women and colloquial language and a study of Australian rhyming slang.

The Australian National Dictionary Centre currently provides editorial expertise to Oxford University Press Australia New Zealand, editing their range of school and general reference dictionaries. The Centre also provides advice to the Commonwealth Style Manual.
