The School of History and the broader ANU community has been saddened by the recent death of Emeritus Professor John Mulvaney at the age of 90.

Highly respected in the field of Archaeology Professor Mulvaney was a founding professor of the ANU School of Archaeology and Anthropology. Professor Mulvaney joined ANU in 1965 and was Professor of Prehistory in the Faculty of Arts from 1971 to 1985. He took early retirement and became Honorary Secretary of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and Chair of the ACT Heritage Committee.

John produced an extensive catalogue of literature on Australian history and pre-history during his career. He was a respected authority in the fields of History and Archaeology and his fieldwork and written work had a significant impact on our understanding of Australia's cultural history. John’s third excavation, at Kenniff Cave between 1960 and 1963, provided evidence of Australian Aboriginal occupation thousands of years prior to previously established dates.

John was widely respected for his fostering of the disciplines of Archaeology and Anthropology in Australia and his role in increasing public awareness of the value of Australia's cultural heritage.
