Presented by ANU School of History's "Deepening Histories of Place" project and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, 'Our Music' is about listening to, and performing with Sydney’s indigenous musicians.

The ‘Our Music’ day will re-establish the Conservatorium as a meeting place, a performing place, a listening place for Sydney’s indigenous musicians and all who are interested in meeting with and sharing our rich heritage and character.

The Sydney Conservatorium is located next to historic Aboriginal bora grounds of initiation where for thousands of years important cultural music ceremonies took place.

We know, by simply looking at Sydney’s rocks and by listening to all the information available that the sophisticated Aboriginal cultures have developed and survived in the Sydney regions for at least 25,000 years.

So much is achieved in understanding culture by listening. Music plays a vital role in this communication.

Both contemporary and historic music will be performed at ‘Our Music’ with the Sydney song men presenting three historic chants dating back to 1793. Bennelong’s letter of 1796 will also be set to music. Young and older musicians and storytellers will share their muse on Sydney.Visiting musicians and artists from outback Menindee NSW will present their ‘painted piano’, in song and dance. Conservatorium students will combine in ensemble with Redfern’s Eora college performers and composers.
