Eric Richards will talk about Pat Jalland’s  career and the context of her times, especially relating to the lives of migratory historians in Australia and beyond.

Emeritus Professor Pat Jalland, FASSA, FRHistS, was a Professor of History at the Australian National University from 1997 to 2013. She previously taught History at Universities in England and Canada as well as Australia, and was a Research Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge. Her nine books include Women, Marriage and Politics 1860-1914, which won the WA Literary Awards Non-Fiction Prize; Death in the Victorian Family, which won the NSW Premier's Award for History; and Death in War and Peace: A History of Loss and Grief in England, 1914-1970 (OUP, 2010, 2012).

Eric Richards FASSA, FAHA is an Emeritus Professor of History at Flinders University. His academic career has been prolific and distinguished; he has researched and taught in a wide range of fields including migration in Australian and international contexts and modern Scottish history. His Destination Australia: Migration to Australia since 1901 won a NSW Premier’s Literary Award in 2009, and his Patrick Sellar and the Highlands Clearances: Homicide, Eviction and the Price of Progress won the Scottish History Book of the Year Award in 1999. Eric will be the Carnegie Centenary Professor in Scotland in 2014.
